The resulting three-dimensional velocity distribution in the inlet region is shown in Figure. It is found that every spanwise slice shows a similar flow pattern as that in Figure with varying maximum velocity in the central region.

 

A three-dimensional velocity distribution was investigated by means of traversing the measurement plane with respect to the spanwise direction. The close agreement concerning the three-dimensional flow structure between the micro-PIV measurement result and the numerical simulation result indicates that the micro-PIV is a reliable means for the design and evaluation of microfluidic elements.
